DIY Hourglass

When we brought the funnel rack in today to escape the oppressive heat, I had no idea it would lead us on such an adventure.  I love it when play takes us to places we never anticipated and we have so many more opportunities for cognitive development and knowledge.

It all started with some simple funnel and sand play.....

"You see it coming out, Mommy?  That's cool."
"Oh, its going down down down....like when I flush the potty."

"Its like sand in an hourglass.  Maybe we can make an hourglass."

YES!  We can try to make an hourglass.

Since this was spur of the moment, we had to use what we had on hand – two large glass jars that once held hot sauce.  I would recommend using something smaller, just make sure the neck of the bottle is narrow and the bottles match.  I imagine you can find something great to use from the Dollar Tree if you don’t already have something on hand.  You also need some sand (we used blue sand from Michaels), a funnel, and a hot glue gun.

Ready to go.  See that little hand their waiting anxiously to start?  :)

Pouring in the sand

Hot glue gunning the rim of the bottle.

IT WORKED!!

Our enormous hourglass was a success.

He played with this for almost an hour and it never broke. He "cant wait to show Daddy how cool it is".

  2. This looks so fun! A bit of a silly question, but what exactly is the tubing called that your son is playing with at the beginning of the post? It looks like a funnel from an auto supply store, maybe, with some kind of attached pipe or tube? I would love to pick up a few of those for my sons.

    1. Its just clear tubing from Home Depot. Im not sure if it has a name. Im sure if you ask where the clear tubing is, they will help you find it.

  3. How about 2 liter bottles? That might work?

  4. That looks like a fun project. Please consider linking this post and others to Artsy Play Wednesday (starting this week, July 11th) on Capri + 3. It is a new weekly arts, crafts and play linky. You are welcome to link to more than one post if you have several related to the topic. I'd love to see you there.
