Green Smoothie Ice Pops

We don't post about food very often but this one was too good not to share.

We recently found out that my oldest has a milk allergy.  She LOVES LOVES LOVES yogurt.  I'm talking she would eat it for breakfast lunch and dinner if she could.  She would often choose a yogurt tube for her after dinner treat.  I had no idea how I was going to replace that.  I figured there would be some way to make our own using an alternative to milk.  I did a search on Amazon first to see if there was even a DIY yogurt tube out there.  Of course there is!  What would we do without the internet. I first attempted vanilla pudding with almond milk... operation fail... Blech!!!

My girls have been drinking green smoothies in the morning and love them.  I figured why not stick with what works.

This is my girls all time favorite green smoothie... and we have played around with quite a few ingredients.

Recipe:

1 cup Mango chunks
1 cup pineapple chunks
1 banana
1-2 cups spinach
1-2 cups of water (depending on how thick you want it)
We sometimes throw in some Flax seed.

Getting everything ready.

Adding mango

This is what we used to make the Ice Pops.  They are AWESOME!!  They come 4 in a box and that includes caps.

Ready to blend.

All done.

I put the ice pop containers in a cup to hold them up while we poured in the juice.  We used a funnel for less mess.

Kid approved!

  1. My son also has a milk protein allergy but can drink raw cows milk, if you are comfortable with it, something to look into, I have no issues and have been giving it to him for over two years now. The raw milk still has the enzymes in the milk to break down the protein, these enzymes are destroyed in pasteurization. Raw milk is healthier and you can make your own yogurt from the raw milk, really easy!

    1. I was going to say the same things! How freeing to provide a COMPLETE food instead of paying a lot for soy or almond or some other processed milk. Three of or seven children can't drink "store"milk but thrive on raw milk. Two had such severe milk allergies they were hospitalized a few times for asthma-like symptoms.

  2. Just out of curiosity, how did you find out your daughter had a milk allergy? Was she showing some symptoms? If so, what were they? Thanks!

  3. Both my guys have it too. Trader joes has a delicious coconut milk yogurt & there is a machine (cant remember its name but smaxon has it) thag turns frozen bananas into "ice cream". Its delicious & nogjjng is added to it.

  4. You don't need a special tool for the banana ice cream- just slice a ripe banana into disks, freeze them for an hour, then throw them in a food processor (we use the mini Cuisinart we have for baby food but I am sure a larger one or a blender would work, too). It becomes a delish ice cream-like treat, and you can add honey, peanut butter or cocoa for different tastes. I hope she likes it as an alternative.

  5. Thank you so much for this recipe and ice pop mold suggestion. My 2-year old has sworn off all vegetables. We made these together and she loved loved LOVED them. I was so excited to see her eating spinach! And the molds are great and easy for her to use.
